FMQB: This Week’s article is Jet Flyin, Limousine Ridin, Wheelin’ Dealin

 

Early edition of FMQB! In case you want to escape your family for a few minutes…Turducken, there, quota met. Let’s get onto the Thanksgiving edition of FMQB!

 

Skycam last Thursday night

Football can be slightly boring in person, I remember my first football game being amazed at how much you can see outside of the traditional scope we see on TV. I remember watching from the corner of an endzone, and it’s truly cool to watch routes develop, and you can point at a WR and say “he’s open” 2 seconds before the QB even throws it. Point is, you can’t see the full play on TV. It was really cool on Thursday to see a majority of the game from the view of the Skycam. Nice to see something outside the box a bit, but I think that broadcasts should do this. With the short attention spans that run rampant nowadays, it may be a way to switch things up a bit with different angles each play.

 

Sleeper Team:

Watch out for the Chargers. They’ve won 4 of their last 6 after starting 0-4. Every other team within the division is faltering. Even dissecting their losses, their losses to the Broncos and Dolphins were last minute late field goal misses. The Jags game was also super flukey. And then you can’t really fault them for losses to the Eagles, Chiefs and Patriots. Realistically this team could be 7-3 with people talking about them, so just watch how the season plays out as they could be dangerous in the playoffs.

Crazy ending:

Alright, I know I promised at the beginning of the season I wouldn’t dissect plays or sequences, but the Jaguars and Chargers game was just too crazy to not address. If you know what happened, skip this, but otherwise it’s worth reading! Let’s set the scene. Chargers up 17-14 with 2:51 left in the game, they are just punting the ball to Jacksonville.

  • After 49 seconds and crossing midfield, Bortles throws an interception. Should be game over, right?
  • 1st play, Chargers Fumble! Jags run it back for a score, but it’s reversed. But hey, they have the ball in FG range already
  • Hold your horses, at the 22 yard line (so a 39 yard Field Goal), Bortles throws ANOTHER interception. Game over, right?
  • Nope, Jags have all 3 timeouts since they fumbled the first play last time. 3 runs and 3 timeouts later, there’s 1:08 in the game and Chargers have to punt
  • Josh Lambo, ex Charger, nails a short FG to tie the game as time expires. Overtime
  • Jags punt first possession
  • Chargers throw deep and it’s caught by Travis Benjamin only to be ripped out of his hands and ruled an interception. Guy runs it back 51 yards and gets tackled at the 2 yd line
  • Now fun with penalties. There’s a 15 yard penalty on the INT for taunting. Ball at the 17. Jags go nowhere in 3 plays and line up to kick a field goal, but there’s a delay of game on the defense, march the ball forward 5 yards.
  • Field Goal is BLOCKED! But trickles barely over the uprights. Jags win! BUT, had that delay of game not been called, the ball would have fallen short.
  • “I’m exhausted” Jag’s head coach Doug Marrone afterwards

FMQB: Midway Point

 

Hard to believe we’re already halfway through the season! The best part of there being no true powerhouse in the NFL this year, is the playoff picture is already looking like a close, muddy mess. In the AFC, the top 6 teams are either 6-2 or 5-3. Meaning the Bills are currently the last team in, but just 1 game back from having home field advantage. The NFC is the same (minus the Eagles securely in the top seed). One week could completely change the orders of numbers 2 through 6.

 

 

Season Surprises

  • Jared Goff has to be #1. This isn’t 1 or 2 good games, he has proven he can be a franchise QB in this league
  • Carson Wentz to a certain extent. He had a better rookie year, but he is looking like he’ll be a playoff contender every year
  • Where did the Jaguars come from? Remember the QB controversy with Bortles in the preseason? Not that he’s playing great, but he’s not losing games for them either. Their defense has them at 5-3
  • What happened to the Giants and Buccaneers? The Ben McAdoo looked like a coach of the future last year, and he could easily be out of a job in a few weeks

Buccaneers disappointing

What happened to Jameis “Puddin Pops” Winston this year? Came into the season with so much promise. Analysts were basically putting him as a top 7 or 8 QB this year, with the team making the playoffs. Granted Hard Knocks can make any team look like a Super Bowl contender (case in point, watch the Rams one from last year). But they seemed to show a ton of promise on that show too.

 

For Liberty and Justice For All!

As you know I’m staying out of the politics of the national anthem, but the Ezekiel Elliot back and forth is utterly ridiculous this year. This truly highlights what’s wrong with our court system in America. His suspension has been imposed 3 times, and successfully appealed all 3 times. Make a decision already! Look at this below, why the heck are there so many chances to appeal? For the record, had Elliot served the 6 games, he’d already be a game into his season, with fresh legs and the ability to carry his team into the playoffs. Take a look at this (it’s not fair that I have lawyer friends who read this. I’m sure I’ve butchered this so take it with a grain of salt).

 

8/11: Goodell imposes 6 game suspension on Ezekiel Elliot

9/8: After taking the NFL to court, Elliot was granted an emergency injunction that allowed him to play Week 1.

9/15: NFL files an emergency motion to stay the injunction

10/12: Court rules in NFL’s favor, re-states 6 game suspension

10/16: Elliot’s lawyers ask for an emergency hearing. Is granted a temporary restraining order allowing him to play

10/30: Judge denies temporary injunction, thus re-instituting the 6 game suspension

11/3: Court of Appeals grants a request for an administrative stay, allowing Elliot to play
