FMQB: Kermit the Frog Strikes again
Week 5 is also suspension week, where some players will start their season. Julian Edelman will help a .500 Patriots team immensely and now sees him lining up with Josh Gordon and Gronk, look out…Mark Ingraham is also back to help the Saints, and he should be able to plow in some TD’s rather than relying on Brees to do the heavy rushing work haha.
Overtime Madness!
Titans Eagles was a bit of a shocker. The Eagles went up by a FG in OT, and the Titans converted 3 4th down conversions on the final drive (including a 4th and 15) to win the game. On one 4th down, it was super bold for Mike Vrabel to take the FG team off the field and go for it. Keep in mind we call him bold, but the next coach an idiot…
In Texans vs. Colts, the Colts went for it on 4th and 4 on their own 43 with 27 seconds left. I absolutely hated the call when I saw it, even before the failed 4th down happened. Because I knew the Texans needed 1 play to get into FG range. I still wasn’t a fan of it until I read an interesting point. A punt ensures a tie, the Colts are not a playoff team this year, but they had a hot QB and a hall of fame kicker, and a rookie coach who wanted to show his team that he had faith in them. I have changed my mind and like the call in that situation.
Highlights of the Week:
- Mitch Trubisky of all people had 6 TD’s on Sunday. Could be his coming out party?
- Baker Mayfield struggled with turnovers, yet he put up 42 pts for the Browns, something we’re not used to seeing. A Ravens CB called Baker the “John Elway or Brett Favre of our generation.” Not sure I’d anoint him yet, but can see the gunslinger similarities. It also gave Jon Gruden his first win back in football.
- Patrick Mahomes finally faced adversity, and he stepped up to the plate. He came back, on the road, with a 10 pt deficit and put together a real nice game winning drive. The Left Handed throw was a thing of beauty! Case Keenum looks a bit like a game manager who can also step up when needed. I wouldn’t count out the Broncos yet.
Stat of the Week #1:
The Jets, in last place in the East, have a better point differential than the Dolphins who are in 1st.
Stat of the Week #2:
Only 1 team has converted two 4th downs in OT, the Titans did it 3 times on the same drive
Stat of the Week #3:
Matt Ryan is the first player in NFL history to lose back-to-back games with 350 Pass yards, 3 Pass TD and 0 Int.
Stat of the Week #4:
Adam Vinatieri kicked an NFL record 566th Field Goal, and is only 31 points shy of the all time points record
Stat of the Week #5:
The Rams have only punted 7 times this season, while the Bills punted 7 times on Sunday alone
Stat of the Week #6:
Mahomes has more completions with his left hand (1) than he has interceptions on the season (0).
Stat of the Week #7:
Khalil Mack has played 4 games for the Bears, and has at least a sack and a forced fumble in each game
Stat of the Week #8:
Tom Brady has thrown the ball 1 more time than Jared Goff, yet Goff has 488 more passing yards than Brady.
Stat of the Week #9:
Tom Brady became the 3rd QB to throw for 500 TD’s. IF he decides to play one more year, he passes Manning easy. Same with Brees, it’ll be a race between the two for #1 and #2. I think Brees takes the crown eventually.
Stat of the Week #10:
Mitch Trubisky had 6 TD’s on Sunday. All of last season, he only had 7 TD’s
For the Record:
Here is a look at the Chiefs past undefeated seasons-
- 1996: 4-0
- 2003: 9-0
- 2010: 3-0
- 2013: 9-0
- 2017: 5-0
- 2018: 4-0
The Chiefs have won ZERO playoff games in those seasons
Ridiculous “On Pace For’s” that never seem to come to fruition:
- Ben Roethlisberger and Jared Goff are on a pace to break the NFL all-time record for passing yards in a season.
- Patrick Mahomes is on a pace to break the NFL all-time record for passing touchdowns in a season.
- Both Michael Thomas and Adam Theilen are on pace to break Marvin Harrison’s receptions record
- Julio Jones is on pace for 2,008 yards this season
- JJ Watt reached 80 career sacks in 2 fewer games than Bruce Smith did
If the Playoffs Started today:
It’s that time of year already, where yours truly gets WAY ahead of himself to start talking playoff predictions. Either way, here’s how it looks if the playoffs started today:
- The Chiefs and Bengals would have a first round bye, and the Patriots and Steelers would NOT be in the playoffs.
- The Rams and Bears would have a first round bye, and the Vikings and Eagles would NOT be in the playoffs
Quick Hits:
- We’re only 4 games into it, yet there’s only 1 possible matchup between undefeated teams remaining. Chiefs vs. Rams in November
- Redskins, Bears, Bengals and Dolphins are alone in 1st place
- The week after becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for 400-plus yards in three straight games, Ryan Fitzpatrick was benched.
- If a mere 3 plays or calls go in their favor, the Browns would be 4-0
- Same with the Bears, they are 1 mere play away from being 4-0
- On that note, dare I say the Bears could be for real this year?
- We were dang close to 2 ties this weekend. If Indy punted and Tennessee kicked a FG, both would have been ties
- Rookie head coaches were famously 0-7 to start out the season, but since then a few have found their stride. The Titans and Bears have since each won 3 in a row and are in 1st place in their divisions.
- The Falcons are 1-3, and in all 3 losses they had a chance to win the game on the final possession (whether on defense or offense)
Stat from a non-Rams fan:
Jared Goff posted the 61st perfect passer rating last Thursday. Keep in mind that the punter who goes 1 for 1 for a TD earns a perfect passer rating. Jared Goff had the most attempts and most yards to hit the achievements, meaning he had more opportunities for mistakes. The quote from the non-Rams fan was “You can argue that Jared Goff put up the best QB performance in the history of the NFL that night.”
Earl Thomas situation:
Obviously there’s some drama here and I feel like I should hop in and address it. Earl Thomas, who held out and did not get a new contract from Seattle decided to take the high road and play for the team rather than pull a LeVeon Bell. His reward? He gets injured Week 4, going into a free agent year now at age 30 and coming off an injury. For once I would say I actually agree with Thomas’ position. I think he may regret the middle finger to the sideline, but moreso because he’s a role model and kids now see that image. But the team played hardball on it’s only remaining LOB member and hall of fame caliber safety. I get that the Seahawks are rebuilding, but it would have made sense to keep a veteran guy to train the new group.
Joke of the Week:
Mahomes just threw a better left handed pass in Denver than Tim Tebow ever did
Joke of the Week #2:
The Chiefs’ marketing department deserves a raise:

Point Proven:
Folks, to back up my point from last week, this is now considered roughing the passer…
This one isn’t: http://dailysnark.com/apparently-the-body-weight-penalty-doesnt-count-when-its-the-patriots-sacking-a-qb-video/
And yet this one is again: https://www.12up.com/posts/6188826-video-refs-gifted-patriots-roughing-the-passer-call-after-tom-brady-s-helmet-was-tapped/partners/44566
Blog Annoyingness:
Many may notice that Facebook displays the picture of FMQB to one of the meme pics and not the headline picture of the week. I have known this since Week 1, I’m not doing it on purpose it’s a part of Facebook’s page changes and there’s no way to change it. Rather annoying, but I’d rather end the day on a funny note than not have memes at all. So forgive the fact that Beaker and Eli headline the week of serious football news.
Fun Fact of the Week:
If you Google “best Chargers players of all time,” Ryan Leaf and Eli Manning are early on the list. Drew Brees is too, although I’m sure San Diego is a bit peeved for letting go statistically the best QB in NFL history.
Article of the week:
Speaking of which…Super interesting story on ESPN that talks about the butterfly effect of what happened if Drew Brees’ career would have been different in San Diego. Results include Philip Rivers to the Steelers or Lions, Roethlisberger to the Bills, the Giants never winning a Super Bowl under Coughlin, Gruden is still with the Buccaneers because they were able to draft Calvin Johnson, Brees goes to Miami and effectively keeps Nick Saban in the NFL (completely changing the College Football landscape over the past decade), Tony Romo is the new Saints QB, Favre and Adrian Peterson end up in Dallas together, and our whole understanding of reality changes! Egads!!!
Games of the Week:
- Dolphins at Bengals: one of the teams will be 4-1
- Jaguars at Chiefs: See if the Jags D can slow Kermit down
- Falcons at Steelers: This should have been a much more hyped game
- Vikings at Eagles: Rematch of NFC Championship with both teams having new QB’s, except this year they are a combined 3-4-1
- Drew Brees is 201 yards away from breaking Peyton Manning’s record for the most passing yards in NFL history. Lucky for us he plays in primetime Monday night, so tune in for sure around the 3rd quarter to watch history!
