FMQB: Cardiac Cats and Cards

It’s hard to believe we’re past Week 8 and already to the halfway point of the season. It’s been a fun ride so far, but playoff races are heating up. I’ll get to my halfway predictions soon, but let’s start with an exciting Week 8.

Cardiac Cats:

Last year it was the Colts who you couldn’t trust with a huge lead over, and this year the comeback kids seem to be the Detroit Lions. Last week against the Saints, they were down by 13 points with 5 minutes left and came back to win. On Sunday across the pond, the Brits got to see an awesome comeback after going down 21-0, and finally winning it on a goofy last minute field goal. I think that’s the first time I’ve seen a kicker miss a kick, but the offense got penalized (which couldn’t be declined since they blew the whistle), and got a chance to re-kick and make it to win the game.

Cardiac Cards:

Sunday the Cardinals went from a team that was under the radar, and perhaps lucked into getting to 5-1, to a team that is legitimate and can play with the big boys. On the outside, the 75 yard pass with just over a minute left seems like luck. But when you hear the breakdown of the play, how Palmer changed only one route after seeing the defense, and the route John Brown ran, it was absolutely genius. The Cards are now 2 full games ahead of both the 49ers and Seahawks, in a division that is widely considered the toughest in the NFL.

Quick Hit:

How does the Colts defense shut out the Bengals in Week 7, but give up 51 points to the Steelers on Sunday? Feel bad for Andrew Luck on that game, 34 points wins in this league 95% of the time.

FMQB: Sounds Like a Broken Record

AustinDavis

Before we get to the elephant in the room, I am SO excited this week that I can actually talk about the Rams and not just sound like a homer! The rest of the sports world is talking about Sunday’s game, so I will follow suit. Last week I proclaimed that there were 2 ways to beat the Seahawks, either a strong run game or controlling the clock. Let’s add an incredibly accurate passing game, and pulling trick plays like crazy! Austin Davis was a cool 18-21 on Sunday which is hard to beat.

To the plays everybody is talking about: First, how does one run a trick play when the other team has the ball?!?! The punt return was genius and the entire Seattle team fell for it, running to a floundering Tavon Austin who was on the opposite side of where the ball actually went. Also nice job by Stedman Bailey to run down the punt from the line of scrimmage! The fake punt with 2:55 left was also one of the gutsiest calls I’ve ever seen. Miss that play and Seattle wins the game.

Love seeing Brett Favre say that Austin Davis could be the next Kurt Warner or Tom Brady. I haven’t crowned him yet, but I’m still drinking the Kool-Aid!

Sounds like a Broken Record:

By now everybody’s heard enough about Peyton Manning’s 509. But this is truly a once in a decade type of accomplishment. Marino broke it in 1995, Favre in 2007, and now Manning in 2014. We all just witnessed history, and with the numbers continuing to skyrocket, the odds of a QB playing this many years at such a high level is going to become increasingly difficult. Congrats Peyton!

The Quiet Record Breaker:

Amidst the shuffle, DeMarco Murray is slowly putting up incredible numbers as well. On Sunday, he became the first RB in NFL history to run for 100 yards in his first 7 games.  Hard to believe, but he just took down another Jim Brown record, and yet he’s still not quite on pace to break Dickerson’s record. Could be interesting to see how this turns out, as RB’s tend to do better at the tail end of the year with defenses tiring down. Yet Jason Garrett has had to fuel “pitch count” questions due to the amount of time he gives Murray the ball.

Not Again!

Just 3 weeks after the Buccaneers dreadful blowout against the Falcons, Lovie Smith must have been thinking “Not Again!” Joe Flacco got off to 4 TD passes in the 1st quarter, 5 in the first 17 minutes of regulation. By halftime they were up 38-0, though they had already put the Cruise Control on at the beginning of the 2nd quarter. It wasn’t as bad as going down 56-0 against the Falcons, but to have 2 awful blowouts in 3 weeks is horrible.

Effect of New Overtime Rules:

In 2012 the new overtime rules were put into place, where a TD wins the game but a FG gives the other team a chance to match it. And yes, every older football fan remembers how cheap it was to have the coin toss pretty much decide the game, so I’m giving the new rule an overall thumbs up.

However, we’ve had an interesting side-effect on this new rule; an increase in ties (ugh, that’s worse than kissing your sister). Take a look at this crazy stat! From 1990-2011, there were only 4 ties in those 22 seasons. There has now been 3 ties in the last 3 years with the new rule change. The reason why is due to the FG aspect of the rule. The Bengals had the ball for 6 minutes and banged home a FG. The Panthers then had the ball for 6 minutes themselves with an equal result. All of a sudden, the Bengals only had 2 minutes of regulation to avoid a tie. Yes, I hear all of you saying “they missed the FG.” But that alone is almost asking for ties to happen! NEW RULE PROPOSITION: They should say that if both teams score in OT, then it’s sudden death with no game clock.

I feel like the purpose for having a tie is to avoid 6 hour games where teams can’t score (ala some NHL games, or the Steelers Dolphins 3-0 hurricane game). But if teams have proven they can score (twice), then give them a chance to play it out. Better yet, just switch it to College rules.

FMQB: Surprise Party!

Bit of a shorter post this week, mainly because I watched a whopping 5 minutes of football last week.  But here are a few tidbits that I found interesting last week, as well as a few teams that are surprising this year.

Surprise of the Year #1:

As most fans are aware of, the NFL has placed a “point of emphasis” on several penalties this year, and they have seemed to be entirely too frequent. I was absolutely shocked when I saw the actual difference from this year to last: Games are averaging 17 penalties this year, as opposed to 14 last year. That’s it? 3 penalties a game? I can live with that. But maybe not Percy Harvin, who managed to score 3 TD’s on Monday night only to have all 3 called back by penalties.

Stat of the Week #1:

Despite starting the season 0-2, through 5 games the Colts were leading their division and the #3 seed in the AFC.

FMQB: Teddy, Teddy!

Teddy

Good morning from the Mile High City! We’re here for other reasons than sports, but staying less than a mile away from where Peyton Manning goes to work. Apparently Walgreens gives out a free cup of coffee anytime the Broncos win, so I’d buy stock in CVS until Manning retires because that’s a lot of coffee.

So I try to look at the best things in life and not complain too much, but there is going to be a little taste of the famous FMQB rants in this post. Let’s start with the quality of games this year. I had a previous post that talked about the first 7 games I watched were crappy. Well Week 4 was very similar.

Take a look at the Margins of Victory this week: 31, 28, 27, 24, 24, 21, 21, 19, 13, 7, 6, 5, 3. Nine of the Thirteen games were double digit affairs, with eight of these being three possession games. Primetime games haven’t fared much better, with about 50% being pure blowouts (Lions vs Giants, Steelers vs Panthers, Cowboys vs Saints, and Chiefs vs Patriots). What’s worse is the Thursday night games. All 4 have been decided by 20 points or more. Wasn’t it CBS’s plan to pick the best games of the week (all division games so far) to get the Thursday night crowd watching? Kinda backfired so far. Games have been so rough that I almost decided to put in a Kansas City Royals post in this week’s column…almost.

Thursday night update: Week 5 of CBS’s experiment didn’t go any better, with a 32 point blowout. Loved that Jim Nantz openly admitted that the Top 3 worst blowouts on Thursday night history have been this year.

Dream Come True turns into Worst Nightmare:

Last week I mentioned the quick turn of emotions I felt as a Rams fan watching the Cowboys come back after thinking our season may still be alive. Little did I know that another team’s fanbase could feel a faster swing of emotions, until I watched the Vikings game. Without crowning him (I would never do that…), Teddy Bridgewater seriously looked like a legitimate franchise quarterback on Sunday. I didn’t exactly see what happened until I saw Teddy on the trainers table and Christian Ponder warming up. The collective gasp could be heard 14 miles away from me at TCF Bank Stadium, as the savior of the franchise was getting replaced by the bane of the Vikings existence…the constant reminder that the previous 3 years had been a waste. Luckily Mike Zimmer did not pull from the Leslie Frazier playbook, and in the 11 plays the Ponder saw the field, there were 11 runs! The “Teddy, Teddy, Teddy” chants from the crowd were pretty funny, he’s been in for 1 game.

Stat of the Week #1:

It has been 10 years since the Vikings put up as many total yards as they had on Sunday. It was their Rookie quarterback’s first career start…

Stat of the Week #2:

The Panthers have allowed 75 points in the past 2 games. They were the #2 defense in the league last year

Stat of the Week #3:

It was a tale of 2 halfs for the Eagles and 49ers. Coming into Sunday’s game, the Eagles had scored 27 first half points, and 74 second half points. On the flip side, the 49ers had scored 59 first half points, and a pathetic 3 2nd half points! This completely flip-flopped on Sunday, with the Eagles scoring 21 first half points (nearly as many as they had the first 3 games), and 0 second half points. The 49ers were at least consistent, scoring 13 each half.

Stat of the Week #4:

At the start of Sunday night’s game, with all running backs having played 4 games, DeMarco Murray was leading the league in rushing despite only having 3 games under his belt.

Surpising Stat of the Week #5:

Andy Dalton has his team at 3-0, yet has only thrown 2 TD passes.

Stat of the Week #6:

In a 5 quarter stretch against the Bears and Vikings, the Packers scored 66 unanswered points.

Double-take Stat of the  Week #7:

I was watching the Vikings Packers game in a bar. I quick saw a drive summary for a team that had 9 possessions, two of which had 4 plays and the other 7 had 3 or less plays during the possession. My initial thought was “wow, Ponder hasn’t even gotten them a first down” until I looked up and saw it was highlighting the Packers! In those 9 possessions, the Packers had 28 plays and had scored 28 points.

Stat of the Week #8:

Blake Bortles has played 2 and a half games, and is 3rd in the league in completion percentage.

Stat of the Week #9:

Christian Ponder has only played 1 game, and 10 starting QB’s have the same or fewer interceptions thrown. He’s also been sacked more than half the QB’s in the league.

Quick Hits:

  • How do the Steelers absolutely kill the Panthers last week, and then lose to the winless Buccaneers this week?
  • Why delete a tweet saying Dennis Allen has been fired, if it’s the truth anyway?
  • Either the Texans or Cowboys will be 4-1 after this week
  • Is Kyle Orton THAT good, or THAT lucky. He will have been the starter for 5 teams (within 7 years)
  • Very surprising that the Vikings, 49ers, Giants, Packers, and Bucs all pulled upsets last week
  • Throw it INTO the endzone Chicago and Kansas City
  • Did anybody heed my warning to start Steve Smith last week? FFMQB did 🙂

If the Playoffs were to Start Today, AFC Edition:

Look who would be winning their division! Bengals, Chargers, Texans, Bills

Rant #2:

With all the off the field issues that have occurred this year, I have purposely tried to stay away from talking about them. But somebody made a good point last week. These indefinite suspensions are ridiculous, and the NFL is taking the chicken way out by not making a decision. Ray Rice is already on Week 5 of his suspension, and it doesn’t look to be ending any time soon even though the NFL made a 6 game limit. Adrian Peterson is also waiting for a court date to determine his fate. At the end of the day, Josh Brent killed a guy and he only got like 2 games. Ray Lewis was in a murder investigation, and they let him play in the Super Bowl. But this is a crazy double standard that needs to change.

BlakeBortles

I will get to the game of the year shortly, but is anybody else as happy as I am that nothing happened “off the field” in the NFL this week? Well maybe Roger Goodell is. Either way it was refreshing that the injury report only had football players on it this week…

Heartbreaker, Dream “Taker”:

In this column I try not to mention the Rams too much, but man when they were up 21-0, yours truly was giddy, proclaiming “If the 49ers can beat the Cardinals, the Rams will be tied in 1st place!” The second I said that, the Cowboys mounted a crazy comeback, outscoring the Rams 34-10. Not gonna lie, I am totally drinking the Austin Davis kool-aid this year, but that game was a letdown. There was a glimmer of hope for the season had they pulled that off.

If the Playoffs were to start today:

The Cardinals and Bengals would be the #1 seeds. Try telling that to somebody in 2004!

I am going to do something completely drastic this week. Something that ESPN and every sports talk radio show refuses to do this week…talk football.

FMQB’s Game Slate:

Yours truly was sooooo excited for football to start 2 weeks ago, the offseason seemed longer than normal. I was slightly disappointed to start the season watching lackluster games. My slate started as Seahawks vs Packers (20 point rout), Vikings vs Rams (28 point rout), 49ers vs Cowboys (11 point rout, but it wasn’t that close), Colts vs Broncos (7 point, but I fell asleep with the Broncos up 21), and then Detroit vs Giants (21 point rout). Rather disappointing, and it was only getting worse as we watched the Ravens kill the Steelers and then the Vikings get killed by the Patriots last week. I was on a role of 7 crappy games! But then all of a sudden it’s like a switch flipped, and I was trying to watch the Rams, Packers and Chargers all win last second games at once. Then the Bears crazy comeback on Sunday followed by the Eagles comeback on Monday, and I think it’s safe to say that football is back! (Watching the Falcons rout the Bucs last night didn’t help my case.

“Timeout, we’re not ready to win”

FMQB has always been amazed at the amount of coaches who call timeout to ice kickers, and then see the kicker miss the “practice” kick, but then drill the real deal. Sunday’s timeout mishap involving the Jets was probably the worst I’ve ever seen. Down by 7, “somebody” called timeout right before Geno Smith threw a 37 yard bomb to the endzone for a TD. By rule, only the head coach can call timeout from the sideline, but the ref somehow heard a Defensive Tackle call timeout, and then looked to see the Offensive Coordinator calling timeout. It was surprisingly granted to them and it cost them the game in a crazy turn of events.

FMQB: Time to Panic

Well Week 1 is over and we all know where our teams are going to end up. I love how some shows are already panicking about the fates of their teams this early, so this installment will have me doing the same.

Topsy Turvy AFC East:

There are 3 things that are certain in this life; death, taxes, and the Patriots winning the AFC East…Well for the first time since Tom Brady came in the league in 2001, the Patriots are alone in last place! Miami pulled quite an upset against the Patriots, scoring 23 unanswered points and shutting the Patriots out in the 2nd half with two strip sacks on Brady. Buffalo also pulled quite the upset, going into Chicago and winning it in OT. I’m not sure I can handle the playoffs without Brady, but a nice January Miami game will sure be fun to watch! NFLField

I’m Back! With a Special Thursday Version of Friday Morning Quarterback! The loooonnngggg awaited season starts tonight!

The 2014 NFL season is shaping up to be an odd one. In my mind, there are only 2 elite teams atop each conference; the AFC has the Broncos and Patriots while the NFC has the Seahawks and 49ers. After that there seems to be plenty of “good” teams but no real “great” teams. My first instinct thought this was rather disappointing, but then I realized that we could have a crazy year with a lot of shuffling of teams.

FYI- this first post is very long every year, so if you want a cliff notes version, read everything but hold off on reading analysis on EVERY team. Just pick a few you’re interested in.

Player Predictions

  • My rookies to watch is Kelvin Benjamin (Panthers) and Brandin Cooks (Saints). Both are Wide Receivers, which goes against conventional wisdom. Typically WRs have a steeper learning curve than most other positions, and standout rookie years can be rare. But both are the right play for the right situation. Kelvin Benjamin is going to a team that lost 4 wide receivers in Steve Smith, Ted Ginn, Brandon LaFell, and Domenik Hixon. That’s almost unheard of, so Benjamin should see strong playing time. I also like Brandin Cooks with the Saints. He is a speedy guy who could fill the void of Darren Sproles leaving, and will likely see advantageous coverages. One of these guys will get Rookie of the Year.

  • League MVP is Nick Foles, with Jamaal Charles getting 2nd in voting

  • I see DeSean Jackson getting frustrated with QB Robert Griffin and causing some drama this season.

  • The best rookie QB this year will be Blake Bortles, with the other two 1st round picks (Manziel and Bridgewater) struggling and having more INT’s than TD’s

  • Johnny Manziel will come in during Week 6, and will be starting by Week 7. Not necessarily due to Hoyer playing poorly, but moreso with the season already out of reach for the Browns.

  • The Cowboys will finish 8-8 again this year

  • Teddy Bridgewater will lead the league in turnovers this year (even without starting all 16 games)

  • Surprise teams to make playoffs: Detroit, Chicago, NY Jets

  • Surprise teams to miss playoffs: Cincinnati, Green Bay, Carolina

  • Two most Overrated teams: Carolina and San Diego

  • Two most Underrated teams: NFC four way tie (Carolina, Detroit, Chicago and Atlanta) and Baltimore

  • Not a huge prediction here, but something to keep an eye out for. Peyton Manning will break Favre’s all time TD mark. He’s only 17 behind him now, and is 2 years younger than Favre was when he hit this mark. The only questions now is how fast will Manning get there, and how bad will he beat it at the end of his career.

  • Best new coach: Jay Gruden. Believe it or not, I remember back in the day and watching him coach in the arena league when his brother was still with the Bucs. I love Jay’s fire, and think he could be the “Chip Kelly” of this year. I’m not high on the Redskins, but if there’s a team to completely go from 3-13 to 10-6, it’s this team because of this coach.

Draft Surprise!

NFLDraft

Surprise! To three of my readers out there, I lied. Because you asked for it, I have changed my mind and decided to do my first NFL Draft edition of FMQB! I figured that the 2 extra weeks that ESPN gets to talk about the Draft isn’t enough media attention for everybody, so I’ll do a mini post to add my two cents. As a disclaimer, the reason I initially said “no” was because I’m not much of a College Football guy. But with the ability to witness a potential Top 10 draft class of all time, I felt compelled to get involved.

On a side note, despite my lack of college football knowledge, I have always loved watching the draft. Although it can be one of the more boring pieces of television, it seems to give teams and fan bases hope for the following year. Plus, it always feels like football has been gone so long, that it reminds people that fun is right around the corner! This year has taken FOREVER to get to this point. Holding it 2 weeks later doesn’t help, and neither does the quality of players.

Second side note, I joke about ESPN’s coverage, but I became enthralled in Jon Gruden’s QB Camp series which followed 8 QB’s. If anybody hasn’t seen this and can catch a re-run, I highly recommend it. Especially Johnny Manziel’s episode, which changed my opinion on him 180 degrees (for the better). Gruden does a good job of pointing out flaws, asking the tough questions, and not taking the easy way out. Plus, you think you know football until you watch these guys start to break down plays.

Let’s be honest here, it’s such a crapshoot that even the experts get surprised with picks. So here is my Top 10 Draft Picks, and then where some other notable players could/should go. I tried to be a little gutsy with a few things, including a major trade to start it off!

1. Atlanta Falcons (trade with Houston Texans) — Jadeveon Clowney, DE, South Carolina: With a draft class like this, I see teams willing to move up. I also don’t think Houston is in love with any of the QB’s to warrant a #1 overall pick. The Falcons had a fluke year last year, and don’t need WR, QB, RB, or really anything on offense. An explosive DE could be the missing piece to their puzzle. The Falcons also showed that they are willing to make this move by grabbing Julio Jones a few years ago.
