FMQB: Drop Your Buffs

 

Sorry for the Survivor reference, but now that all the riff-raff are out, it’s time to get down to business.

 

I missed a week, despite some time off. Here’s a snapshot of what Week 16-17 was going to look like.

 

  • The Eagles suddenly aren’t looking invincible anymore
  • Hope you didn’t bet on the Eagles game, their spread was 9.5. Scored a flukey TD at the end of the game to go up 9, and then kneeled during the extra point to be sportsmen. That’s a bad beat!
  • 2 TD’s got called back against the Bills using the stupid catch rule. Go figure it was the Patriots who benefited
  • Interesting situation in the NFC, where you almost want the 4th seed so if you win the first game you play the Wentz-less Eagles. Both the Panthers and Saints will be fighting for the NFC South, so one of them wants to win to get a home game. So if you’re the Rams, I think resting your starters and letting Garrapolo go 5-0 as a 49er makes perfect sense.

 

Back to Week 17, and the culmination of 20 team’s seasons.

11 Seconds In:

Wild Card Weekend opened up with a bang! The Chiefs took the opening kickoff back for a TD, and immediately deflated the raucous Houston crowd. Little did we know, we could have turned the TV off 11 seconds into the game. Houston didn’t show up, and turned the ball over 5 times in the game, 2 of which were in the 1st quarter. It was also the first playoff shutout in a decade. A few of Brian Hoyer’s throws were to a wide open Chief, not a Texan in sight. The Chiefs on the other hand looked dominant and played complete football. They’re on 11 straight wins now.

We’re to playoff time! The season is always fun, but the final 11 games always ramp up the pressure and drama. But first, a few Week 17 notes.

 

Week 17

The Jets controlled their destiny and missed out on the playoffs, losing to nemesis Buffalo with only revenge to play for. Feel bad for Ryan Fitzpatrick, who sort of revitalized his career this year and played solid football, but has never seen the playoffs.

 

Still shocked that the Patriots laid an egg against the Dolphins, and gave up the #1 seed. It’s a good thing that Brady has a BYE, because he looked severely hobbled after the game.

Without trying to sound like a broken record, the final 4 or so weeks of the season is always the most exciting! We’re down to the nitty gritty, and one of my favorite websites is back up again! Head over to the Playoff Machinehttp://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/machine where you can pick the final 4 weeks to see what the Playoff matchups would be.

 

  • I have the Packers and Vikings tied for record entering their Week 17 matchup, which could bring the entire division down to that final game in Lambeau.
  • The Broncos vs Bengals Week 16 matchup will determine who gets a first round bye
  • I have quite the change in seeding for the AFC, with the Patriots pulling the #1 Seed (at 3 now), and the Steelers leapfrogging the Jets.
  • The NFC is pretty much the same, with the Packers winning the division, Seattle and Minnesota flipping Wild Card spots, and the Eagles taking the East.

Week 8

Broken Record:

There have been 2 points I feel like we’ve seen week after week this season. First, crazy comebacks. Second, teams that tie up the game with barely any time left, and then somehow getting the ball back and kicking a game winning field goal. Two games featured both instances occurring on Sunday. The Vikings were down 20-13 with less than 5 minutes in the game. After a long drive to tie the game, the Bears had 1:49 to either win the game or send it into OT. Not only did they go 3 and out, but the Bears had 2 incomplete passes which stopped the clock for the Vikings (they never had to call a timeout on this drive). Bridgewater then went 48 yards in 4 plays, 36 yard FG is good. Boom!

 

The second game was the high scoring slug fest between the Giants and the Saints. In the 4th Quarter, the Saints were actually up 42-28. The Giants then scored 3 unanswered TD’s in less than 8 minutes to take a 49-42 lead. Then it was the Saints turn to comeback, scoring with only 36 seconds left to tie the game at 49. Overtime, right? Wrong! In a terrible turn of events, the Giants went incomplete pass, short completion (Giants timeout), and then incomplete pass to take a whopping 16 seconds off the clock. Then in another debacle, the Giants punted and allowed a 24 yard return before the Punter mauled the guys facemask, adding an extra 15 yards. The Saints then kicked a 50 yard field goal to win the game 36 seconds after they tied the game.

Who Dey:

After Sunday’s amazing comeback win (twice), the Bengals are sitting pretty. They are now 3 full games up over the Ravens just 3 games into the season, the Browns aren’t seeming to pose much of a threat, and the closest team just lost their starting QB for 6 weeks. It’s almost not too early to crown them division champs with it hard to picture any other team coming close. Granted the only thing Bengals fans focus on nowadays is what happens in the playoffs (which have been ugly the last 4 years). The Bengals scored 2 go ahead TD’s on late 4th quarter drives on Sunday, in a hostile Baltimore environment.

Wild Card Recap:

 

Slightly anti-climactic week, especially when the “Wild” in Wild Card normally comes into play. The fact that 80% of this section will talk about one game kind of sums up the weekend.

 

Cardinals at Panthers:

You have to be a true fan to like low scoring affairs, but even this one got a little brutal. The Cardinals couldn’t do anything on offense, and the only time they scored was when Carolina made mistakes. The goal line fumble by Arizona, which turned into a TD was about the only exciting part of the game. Cardinals set the record for the lowest offensive yards in playoff history with 78. To be fair, this was after a 19 yard loss due to a lateral fest. I feel bad for the Cardinals, they started 9-1 and seemed to be cruising to the Super Bowl in their home stadium, but my how fast things change.

 

Ravens at Steelers:

This game was closer than the final score eluded to. The Steelers kept showing life, but then the Ravens D would step up with a crucial sack or the crazy Suggs INT catch between the legs. I’ll admit I was proved wrong in thinking they could still run the ball without Bell. But I think Chris Collinsworth put it best in saying “as a defense the first thing you want to do in a playoff game is take away the run, and it’s almost like the Steelers have done that to themselves for the Ravens.” At the end Baltimore pulled away and scored the only road win of the weekend.

Not Again!

Just 3 weeks after the Buccaneers dreadful blowout against the Falcons, Lovie Smith must have been thinking “Not Again!” Joe Flacco got off to 4 TD passes in the 1st quarter, 5 in the first 17 minutes of regulation. By halftime they were up 38-0, though they had already put the Cruise Control on at the beginning of the 2nd quarter. It wasn’t as bad as going down 56-0 against the Falcons, but to have 2 awful blowouts in 3 weeks is horrible.

 

Effect of New Overtime Rules:

In 2012 the new overtime rules were put into place, where a TD wins the game but a FG gives the other team a chance to match it. And yes, every older football fan remembers how cheap it was to have the coin toss pretty much decide the game, so I’m giving the new rule an overall thumbs up.

 

However, we’ve had an interesting side-effect on this new rule; an increase in ties (ugh, that’s worse than kissing your sister). Take a look at this crazy stat! From 1990-2011, there were only 4 ties in those 22 seasons. There has now been 3 ties in the last 3 years with the new rule change. The reason why is due to the FG aspect of the rule. The Bengals had the ball for 6 minutes and banged home a FG. The Panthers then had the ball for 6 minutes themselves with an equal result. All of a sudden, the Bengals only had 2 minutes of regulation to avoid a tie. Yes, I hear all of you saying “they missed the FG.” But that alone is almost asking for ties to happen! NEW RULE PROPOSITION: They should say that if both teams score in OT, then it’s sudden death with no game clock.

 

I feel like the purpose for having a tie is to avoid 6 hour games where teams can’t score (ala some NHL games, or the Steelers Dolphins 3-0 hurricane game). But if teams have proven they can score (twice), then give them a chance to play it out. Better yet, just switch it to College rules.

Bit of a shorter post this week, mainly because I watched a whopping 5 minutes of football last week.  But here are a few tidbits that I found interesting last week, as well as a few teams that are surprising this year.

Surprise of the Year #1:

As most fans are aware of, the NFL has placed a “point of emphasis” on several penalties this year, and they have seemed to be entirely too frequent. I was absolutely shocked when I saw the actual difference from this year to last: Games are averaging 17 penalties this year, as opposed to 14 last year. That’s it? 3 penalties a game? I can live with that. But maybe not Percy Harvin, who managed to score 3 TD’s on Monday night only to have all 3 called back by penalties.

Stat of the Week #1:

Despite starting the season 0-2, through 5 games the Colts were leading their division and the #3 seed in the AFC.
