FMQB: The Only Person who should be benched is McAdoo’s Barber!

I swear on everything Holy I wrote this on Monday!

“One really has to wonder if Eli Manning will be a Giant next year. QB’s like Josh McCown, Tyrod Taylor, Jameis Winston, Jacoby Brissett, and Ryan Fitzpatrick all have better passer ratings than Manning. He would be 37 going into next season, I think there’s a high likelihood he either retires, or sticks around to groom a top 3 pick in the draft.”

I promise you I wrote that on Monday before the news! He was officially benched on Tuesday. In my opinion, this is complete crap. First off, you’re not going to learn anything new or get reps for a QB you’ve never seen before (Geno has been a starter for multiple years). Second, it’s Week 13 and they’re officially out of the playoff race. Third, this is your franchise QB and one who has brought you two Lombardi trophies. You owe it to him and his 13 year career not to end his streak of starts. Just let him ride out the season, and have a closed door meeting with him saying that he’s not your franchise QB, and they can either trade or release him. This action alone makes McAdoo’s firing justified.

Quick Hits:

  • Rams have a tough schedule to end the year, but pretty surprised to see them knock off the 8 game win-streaking Saints.
  • Wow, the Chiefs have fallen on hard times.
  • I’m no doctor, but Aaron Rodgers sure seemed like he could throw the ball fine going into Sunday night.
  • In 3 plays, Garrapolo had the first TD for the 49ers after Beathard played the entire game. Just saying…
  • Two surprises of the week: Cardinals and Blaine Gabbert knocking off the Jaguars, and the Packers playing tough against the Steelers and barely losing.
  • You have Antonio Brown and Julio Jones on one level, and then there’s every other receiver in the league.

FMQB: This Week’s article is Jet Flyin, Limousine Ridin, Wheelin’ Dealin

Early edition of FMQB! In case you want to escape your family for a few minutes…Turducken, there, quota met. Let’s get onto the Thanksgiving edition of FMQB!

Skycam last Thursday night

Football can be slightly boring in person, I remember my first football game being amazed at how much you can see outside of the traditional scope we see on TV. I remember watching from the corner of an endzone, and it’s truly cool to watch routes develop, and you can point at a WR and say “he’s open” 2 seconds before the QB even throws it. Point is, you can’t see the full play on TV. It was really cool on Thursday to see a majority of the game from the view of the Skycam. Nice to see something outside the box a bit, but I think that broadcasts should do this. With the short attention spans that run rampant nowadays, it may be a way to switch things up a bit with different angles each play.

Sleeper Team:

Watch out for the Chargers. They’ve won 4 of their last 6 after starting 0-4. Every other team within the division is faltering. Even dissecting their losses, their losses to the Broncos and Dolphins were last minute late field goal misses. The Jags game was also super flukey. And then you can’t really fault them for losses to the Eagles, Chiefs and Patriots. Realistically this team could be 7-3 with people talking about them, so just watch how the season plays out as they could be dangerous in the playoffs.

Crazy ending:

Alright, I know I promised at the beginning of the season I wouldn’t dissect plays or sequences, but the Jaguars and Chargers game was just too crazy to not address. If you know what happened, skip this, but otherwise it’s worth reading! Let’s set the scene. Chargers up 17-14 with 2:51 left in the game, they are just punting the ball to Jacksonville.

  • After 49 seconds and crossing midfield, Bortles throws an interception. Should be game over, right?
  • 1st play, Chargers Fumble! Jags run it back for a score, but it’s reversed. But hey, they have the ball in FG range already
  • Hold your horses, at the 22 yard line (so a 39 yard Field Goal), Bortles throws ANOTHER interception. Game over, right?
  • Nope, Jags have all 3 timeouts since they fumbled the first play last time. 3 runs and 3 timeouts later, there’s 1:08 in the game and Chargers have to punt
  • Josh Lambo, ex Charger, nails a short FG to tie the game as time expires. Overtime
  • Jags punt first possession
  • Chargers throw deep and it’s caught by Travis Benjamin only to be ripped out of his hands and ruled an interception. Guy runs it back 51 yards and gets tackled at the 2 yd line
  • Now fun with penalties. There’s a 15 yard penalty on the INT for taunting. Ball at the 17. Jags go nowhere in 3 plays and line up to kick a field goal, but there’s a delay of game on the defense, march the ball forward 5 yards.
  • Field Goal is BLOCKED! But trickles barely over the uprights. Jags win! BUT, had that delay of game not been called, the ball would have fallen short.
  • “I’m exhausted” Jag’s head coach Doug Marrone afterwards

FMQB: Midway Point

Hard to believe we’re already halfway through the season! The best part of there being no true powerhouse in the NFL this year, is the playoff picture is already looking like a close, muddy mess. In the AFC, the top 6 teams are either 6-2 or 5-3. Meaning the Bills are currently the last team in, but just 1 game back from having home field advantage. The NFC is the same (minus the Eagles securely in the top seed). One week could completely change the orders of numbers 2 through 6.

Season Surprises

  • Jared Goff has to be #1. This isn’t 1 or 2 good games, he has proven he can be a franchise QB in this league
  • Carson Wentz to a certain extent. He had a better rookie year, but he is looking like he’ll be a playoff contender every year
  • Where did the Jaguars come from? Remember the QB controversy with Bortles in the preseason? Not that he’s playing great, but he’s not losing games for them either. Their defense has them at 5-3
  • What happened to the Giants and Buccaneers? The Ben McAdoo looked like a coach of the future last year, and he could easily be out of a job in a few weeks

FMQB: Puddin’ Pops

Buccaneers disappointing

What happened to Jameis “Puddin Pops” Winston this year? Came into the season with so much promise. Analysts were basically putting him as a top 7 or 8 QB this year, with the team making the playoffs. Granted Hard Knocks can make any team look like a Super Bowl contender (case in point, watch the Rams one from last year). But they seemed to show a ton of promise on that show too.

For Liberty and Justice For All!

As you know I’m staying out of the politics of the national anthem, but the Ezekiel Elliot back and forth is utterly ridiculous this year. This truly highlights what’s wrong with our court system in America. His suspension has been imposed 3 times, and successfully appealed all 3 times. Make a decision already! Look at this below, why the heck are there so many chances to appeal? For the record, had Elliot served the 6 games, he’d already be a game into his season, with fresh legs and the ability to carry his team into the playoffs. Take a look at this (it’s not fair that I have lawyer friends who read this. I’m sure I’ve butchered this so take it with a grain of salt).

8/11: Goodell imposes 6 game suspension on Ezekiel Elliot

9/8: After taking the NFL to court, Elliot was granted an emergency injunction that allowed him to play Week 1.

9/15: NFL files an emergency motion to stay the injunction

10/12: Court rules in NFL’s favor, re-states 6 game suspension

10/16: Elliot’s lawyers ask for an emergency hearing. Is granted a temporary restraining order allowing him to play

10/30: Judge denies temporary injunction, thus re-instituting the 6 game suspension

11/3: Court of Appeals grants a request for an administrative stay, allowing Elliot to play

FMQB:

Roller Coaster:

Even though they are division rivals, I feel just terrible for the Cardinals. I know every fan base minus maybe the Patriots has the “woe is me” approach, but the Cardinals can definitely be up there. They’ve had YEARS of mediocrity, never in the playoffs but too good for the #1 pick. All of a sudden they get Kurt Warner, and have a Super Bowl win locked down only to have heartbreak happen. They’ve been solid since, but have lost several playoff games. They finally get Adrian Peterson, who absolutely goes off in his resurgence. Enough so that Larry Fitz was talking about the “rings” they would have had if AP had been there the whole time. Flash forward 1 week, Palmer gets hurt and is out for the season, Bruce Arians (a coaching genius) is talking about not returning, and AP regresses to Saints-like numbers. They were a playoff caliber team as of last week, and it looks like they’ll lock up pick #8 again.

Stat of the Week:

Bears CB Eddie Jackson is the first defensive player to have 2 75+ yard defensive return TD’s in a game.

Stat of the Week #2:

There are 3 QB’s in the league who have thrown for more INT’s than TD’s this season (looking at at least 75 attempts). Two of them play for Cleveland…Fun fact, I decided to save a stat for next week but didn’t want to re-number all of these. I had to come up with one more stat, which is how I discovered this gem!

FMQB: Keep ‘er Movin’

I’m back! And I feel like I missed a lot! I’m not going to dive back into Week 5 much, but the Browns and 49ers are still losing, the Raiders are apparently faltering, and Big Ben had a 5 INT game?!?! I guess Bradford came back and tried to play too? Ahhhhhh!

Le’veon Me Alone!

The one downside to being such a huge football fan is that I’m rarely in awe anymore. But watching the Steelers game had my mouth agape. It literally seemed like everytime Bell was handed the ball, he got a minimum of 7 yards, if not closer to 15. That’s insane as it is, let alone in a league where the run game is dying. They even ran the ball on 3rd and 9, and got the first down! The most telling was the first play after halftime. Tony Romo said something to the effect of “the Chiefs would have gone into halftime and come up with a gameplan to stop the run. Look at how many people they have in the box right now.” Indeed it was stacked, and Bell got through it for a gain of 15.

Stat of the Week #1:

In the Rams Jaguars game, it was the 1st time in NFL history with 2 TD’s within the first 25 seconds of a game. The Rams ran back the opening kickoff, kicked a touchback, and then Fournette ran 75 yards on the first play.

FMQB: Feel the Rhythm, Feel the Rhyme, C’Mon Friday, It’s Football Time!

Last season was the season of comebacks. I’m already sensing a theme this year which is the season of surprise wins. Last week had 10 underdogs take it in one of Vegas’ most lucrative weekends. This week we had Rams beat Cowboys in Dallas, Bills beat Falcons, Panthers over Patriots in New England, and Texans with 57 points over Titans. I really don’t remember back to back weeks where I looked at the scoreboard to 5+ “wows.”

Surprise Records too!

The Bills and Rams are alone in 1st place in their division. Keep in mind these are divisions who have the Patriots (in 3 of the last 6 Super Bowls) and Seahawks (in 2 of the last 4 Super Bowls).

FMQB: Psych!

This week’s article will be focusing 100% on football, and not politics. Because that’s why I and millions of other Americans watch this game; for entertainment purposes. Everybody has and is entitled to their opinions. Nobody is right, nobody is wrong, it’s an opinion about what you think is right. And that folks, is the most I’ll say about this subject the entirety of the season. Now on to Football!

Crazy week of upsets:

Apparently the Thursday night game was a precursor to the surprises we’d see on Sunday! Jags blowing out the Ravens, Bills over Broncos, Bears over Steelers, Vikings with a backup QB dominating the Bucs, Jets over Dolphins, Saints blowing out undefeated Panthers, and Redskins over the Raiders. We also came dang close to the Bengals knocking off the Packers, and the Texans taking out the Patriots.

Surprise records:

It’s Week 3, I get it, it’s early. But still!

  • Bills are 2-1 and technically in 1st place in their division
  • Jaguars are 2-1, tied for first
  • Giants are 0-3, team many had making a deep playoff run
  • Vikings are 2-1 with their QB only playing in 1 game
  • Rams are 2-1, alone in 1st place in their division
  • Seahawks are 1-2

FMQB: Sponsored by Mercedes-Benz- The Best or Nothing

Game of the Season:

So many people panned the 49ers Rams matchup last night and likely refused to watch the game of the season. The best meme I saw said “This nights game has been moved to Comedy Central.” Well the jokes on you folks! Highest scoring game in Thursday night history, and the 4th quarter saw the following drives: Rams TD to go up 14, San Fran TD but missed extra point (down 8), Rams TD to go up 15, 49ers TD to bring it within 8, Rams fumble the kickoff with 5 minutes left in the game, 49ers score as a result but miss the 2 pt conversion, so they’re down 2. Successful Onside kick with 2 minutes left, but the Rams D finally holds them. Wow what a whirlwind!

Thursday Night Disclaimer:

Most of this article is complete before Thursday. But many times the Thursday Night game can throw off some stats from the week before (you’ll see with the 49ers TD total below). This is just a disclaimer that unless I specifically reference the game played on Thursday, the entire article is about Week 2 games.
